Henri Matisse was born on the last day of 1869.
He was one of the leaders of the "Fauves" (Wild Beasts) - the first of the avant-garde movements. The group was the first to break with traditional methods of perception. They used bold brushstrokes and vibrant colours to express their spontaneous, subjective response to nature.
