December 2016 - GIAN LORENZO BERNINI

St Peter's Square
Vatican City, inside Rome, Italy
As they enter the piazza (= the square), the faithful are embraced by "the motherly arms of the church" - this is how Bernini described his Colonnade.
The gifted sculptor and architect, Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed and built the square in front of St Peter's Basilica in Rome between 1656 and 1667.
